OK, you're not a knight yet, but surely it won't be long before you're knighted for your cultural and creative accomplishments. On one side you have George Lucas' wildly influential films, and on the other you have stage work in service of not just Shakespeare and Shepard, but also Tom Stoppard, Fyodor Dostoevsky and more. McDiarmid's resume is a study in binary excellence. (What a wannabe that dude turned out to be.) McDiarmid has starred in other speculative fantasies, like Dragonslayer and Sleepy Hollow, and even played a villain almost as heavy as The Emp himself: Satan, from John Milton's Paradise Lost. McDiarmid has inhabited the evil emperor's role memorably ever since, blotting out memories of the old lady with superimposed chimp eyes that portrayed Palpatine's hologram in The Empire Strikes Back (before Lucasfilm digitally retconned McDiarmid into the film's 2004 DVD release).
